PHASES
Mixed Media
I chose the medium of photography and took inspiration from the artist Barbara Kasten. She uses color plexiglass and lighting to create pieces which explore perception and light. In my work, I used multi-colored plexiglass panels that I assembled on a table.
Then I was able to get a large spotlight to shine over the plexiglass. I suspended a paper cut out of a butterfly with thread from the plexiglass and started taking photos. This setup allowed me to experiment with lighting and shadow. I tried to express a fluid vision by taking photos at different angles which included closeup zoomed out, blurred, and abstract.
Below are the two pieces that were on display for the mixed media show at St. John’s. On the left I created a framed collage piece of selected photos I took. On the right, I showcased a few original glossy photos in the top row. To make the display more engaging, I manipulated some of the photos (second row) and chose to present the collection by hanging them on a string with colorful clothespins.
